Sony EX3 & 32GB SDHC
on Apr 6, 2009 at 7:58:43 pm

Just wondering if anyone has used the Sony EX3 with a MxM Express Card Reader with 32GB SDHC cards? I wasn't sure if the 32GB cards would work or not.

Thanks!

I've been using MxR with Sandisk Ultra II 32GB cards since January without issue. MxM is the same adaptor so they'd work.

I've heard someone also was able to use Transcend Class 6 32GB without issue.

Craig,

What class sandisk 32 card are you using?

Thanks,

Class 2. It makes NO DIFFERENCE. They work fine.
Many Class 6 cards from other manufacturers DO NOT WORK.

Sandisk Ultra 2 and Extreme 3 (supposedly class 6) work (3 has NO BENEFIT to EX)
Transcend Class 6 work. That's it.

I'm also trying to figure out roughly how much time it will take (or possibly the transfer rate) to copy the files from an SDCH card to an external firewire hard drive that's connected via an 800 firewire cable to a Mac Book Pro laptop.

Basically I was planning to keep the SDCH card inside the MxM card reader and insert that into the ExpressCard/34 slot on the MBP to copy the files but I wasn't sure how it would take to copy the files. And we decided to use the 16GB SDCH cards instead of the 32GB.

I haven't tried on my MacBook Pro. With two 32GB cards I have nearly 4 hours of record time so I never need to offload during shoots anymore.

Using my Sandisk 12 in 1 SDHC card reader into my MacPro I get 2x with CRC on in Clipbrowser and 4x with CRC off (although I never turn it off).

I'm not quite sure what you mean you by "2x" & "4x"?

Would that mean 2x real time - meaning that if you shot 30 minutes of footage it would take 60 minutes to copy the files using the Clipbrowser?

2 times or 4 times faster than real time.
2 hours on 32GB card takes either 1 hour or 30 minutes to transfer.

Depending on the variables I can't imagine it being any slower on MacBookPro. The aforementioned speed is fast enough to offload during a shoot and have the card ready to go before the next card fills.
