EX-3 slow motion

Since the camera is 24p native, does it use 3/2 pulldown to record in 1080i? What are experiences over cranking and playing back in
1080i, is it smooth?

Major wrong assumptions here.
In fact your question doesn't make sense. If a camera is "native" it means just that. No pulldown.

720 24p, 25p, 30p, 50p, 60p
1080 24p, 25p, 30p, 50i, 60i
They're all "native"
24p (23.98) is just that. Native means no pulldown.
Overcrank is progressive not interlace.
You can overcrank in 24, 25, 30p frame rates. In 720 the max is framebase(24,25,30)/60.
It plays back smoothly in whatever your base frame rate is.

Actually in HDV mode you can shoot 1080 24 in 60i for example but I'd never choose HDV(SP) mode when I can chose HQ.

Perfect, just what I needed to hear. I have a client that wants to
purchase an EX3. We usually shoot on film, 35mm at 300fps. He wants
to be able to use the EX3 as a grab and go camera and be able to do
slow motion. "Progressive" in film of course is perfectly smooth. But
we were wondering if the way slow motion was arrived at in the EX3 was an extrapolation
of some sort. So it is discreet frames? Sounds like you are perfectly happy with the smoothness of
slow motion with the EX3. The slowest is 60fps, right?

The EX1 was an mpeg codec, but I believe the
EX3 is not. Am I asking the right questions?

Thanks!

[Harry Dawson] "So it is discreet frames?"
Yes

[Harry Dawson] "you are perfectly happy with the smoothness"
Slow mo is smooth as butter or silk or (place favorite smooth substance here)

[Harry Dawson] "The slowest is 60fps, right?"
Yup. So 24/60 would be 2.5x slow down.

The fundamental challenge with video is that the more you slow down the more data rate you need through the "pipe"

XDCAM plays back at about 35mbps so 2.5x is about 87.5mbps.
There are cameras that can go slower than 60fps but increase cost appropriately. RED can. Phantom is king of that hill but you have to have a midas wallet to climb that. That's a rental (and even that some bucks).

[Harry Dawson] "The EX1 was an mpeg codec, but I believe the
EX3 is not. Am I asking the right questions? "

Nope! All XDCAM is MPEG2 Long GOP regardless of camera. Although some can shoot other formats.

Thanks for your notes Craig. Yes we plan to shoot with the Phantom HD,
possibly the RED or F35, as we're blessed with enough backing to do it.

The EX3 looks like a good camera for "all round use everyday." I got a HVX200 a couple of years ago because I liked the tapeless workflow and the ability to shoot different codecs. And the fact it didn't shoot mpeg.

I'm thinking that today, I would buy the EX3 instead for best quality in a smaller format camera. And I am recommending it to clients when they want something for themselves. Do you concur?
