EX-3 (back?) - focus problem
on Feb 16, 2009 at 7:25:21 pm

My EX-3 lens has gone crazy. It act's as if there is some kind of macro switched on.
Its only in focus almost zoomed out, and when I zoom in a little it goes completely blurry to come back in focus only at the very end of zoom.
anybody else with the same problem?

There are a few posts related to this issue already.

Sony has a software upgrade ready. You need to contact Sony service and set up a warranted repair so the camera does not sit there forever in line with other repairs.

Sometimes powering the camera down, removing the battery for some time(?), will solve the focus issue.

Best of luck.

Just type in the word "focus" into the search field at the top of the forum page. You'll get lots of results. Here's one where the EX3 focus issue complaints started back in September of last year:

Have you tried resetting the back focus.

I had to do that twice after I got a new lens from Sony.

It is really easy, it is in manual. All you need is a BF chart and invoke the menu item. It is done in 15 seconds, all by itself. Much easier than normal ENG lenses by hand.

Below is a link to chart.

Wow, automatic back focus setting? How does that work?
I agree, it would be much easier than traditional back focus settings.

It works well. You need to get a proper test chart first though. Then you need to mount the chart on a wall and your camera on a tripod. Then you need good lighting.

Then turn on your camera, press and hold the Menu and the SEL/SET buttons at the same time and then press the CANCEL button. In the viewfinder the Maintenance menu will appear. Scroll down to "FB Adjust" and hit enter. The letters "FB" stand for "Flange Back" which is the official terminology for adjusting back focus. Make sure your camera is in full auto focus mode. Zoom in to the test chart so that it fills the screen and then hit "Execute" in the menu. The rest is all automatic and takes about 15 seconds.

Any other EX3 users STILL have the back focus problem in Full MF mode? I still do in spite of doing the FB adjust AND sending to Sony. No remedy with stock lens. Others out there?

fb adjusting didn't help with mine either. I am sending it back right now.

Hi Don,
What kind of chart to use?
Where can I get one?
I have the Firmware updated but I'm having some Back-focus problem (well, my camera).

You can download and print out a selection of free charts here:

I was using the one on the lower left.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but have been having back focus issues with my EX1 (not EX1R). The firmware has been updated to v1.25.

When I go into the Maintenance menu, the AutoFB adjust has been greyed out. I've put the camera in full auto mode, the lens is in Auto focus.

Can anyone suggest anything else to get the Auto FB option lit up?

Many thanks
Chris

Emergency over!

Realised that I hadn't got the zoom servo turned on!

Have done the Back Focus, so looking forward to crisp wide shots again...

Many thanks
Chris
