Sony XDCAM EX Transcode question
on Jan 16, 2009 at 11:04:04 am

Hey guys. Project shot with EX-1, XDCAMEX 25fps. I have a mac at home with FCP 6.0.4 but in work we still only run 6.0 with Blackmagic cards. I've tried transcoding at home to a few different codecs incl Blackmagic 8bit and 10bit, HDV and Apple ProRes and I get horrible results.

File-size isn't an issue, I just want big crisp clear pics. How should I transcode, format-wise? :)

Cheers for any help.

B

Had you set "Render all YUV material in High Precision YUV" when rendering in a 10b codec?
Are you resizing? If so set Render Motion Effects: BEST.
Cheers,
Rafael

Rafael,

Could you please explain what "Render all YUV material in High Precision YUV" does to improve the look of SD renders?

Also, I wanted to compliment you on the beautiful video on your website.
Has a very nice almost 3-D look!
How are you achieving the vignette you use?
Looks great.
Thanks.

Hi Kevin,
When you set "Render all YUV material in High Precision YUV", FC works in 32b Floating point mode.
That mean that any transformation/effect applied to your footage is done with much higher accuracy.
The rounding errors that occurs when working with 8b are minimized. This is important when you apply few filters to your stuff. The picture will benefit from this better rendering even if you export back to just 8b.
Setting "Render Motion Effects: BEST" is also important when downscaling from HD to SD. This mode you set FC to work with the higher level of quality that the application offers.
Thanks for the comments on my humble website. The clip in he font with the PD170P and I make the vignette with the old MagicBullet.
I would like you to have a look to this clip that is done with the EX-1:

Hope you like it.

Can your work just not upgrade to the latest FCP version? it's all very stable especially with BMD cards
