carry on bag for EX-3
on Dec 28, 2008 at 11:06:22 pm

My Ex-3 came just before Christmas and I have yet to find a case for it.

Any one with experience with a carry on airline case for the EX-3?
I am concerned about protecting the view finder. Also I am looking for a custom hard case for the EX-3 for auto travel.

Thanks

We have this one for every day use: http://www.evsonline.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=DV... It fits in overhead bins for airline travel.

For a hard case:http://www.all-pelican-cases-4-less.com/detail_pelican_1610.html'> http://www.all-pelican-cases-4-less.com/detail_pelican_1610.html It's a tad big for airline travel but we've gotten this one on Southwest and US Airways. Buy it with the PADDED INTERIOR. The foam is useless. You'll also do well to get the Photographer's Lid Organizer.

Most people don't know that the media gets special privileges when traveling on planes. We can pre-board and we can carry smaller tripods. Make up an ID badge in Photoshop and laminate it.

Thanks Steve.... Does the porta brace you use for airline travel protect the view finder on the EX 3? It is a shame that the view finder does not come off. My HRV 270 had the same problem

Thanks

Take a look at the Petrol camcorder bags. They make nice gear.
I have used their PCC-2 camera case for years and it's been great.
They have hard and soft cases.

Hello Bob... that case does look good... Will it fit in the overhead or ouder the seat on the plane?

Thanks

Hello Ronnie. The one I have is for a big Betacam. It won't fit in the overhead compartment. Take a look at the other ones they have. They specifically mention the PDRB-4 for the EX3. http://www.petrolbags.com/

Thanks Bob: I will compare the outside dimentions to those of the TSA specs. I have decided on a local transport hard case but still looking for an air line travel case that will fit in the overhead bin or under the seat.

Thanks again

The camera straps to the bottom of the bag and we pack accessories around it, in padded bags. The Petrol bags are also very durable. The KATA bags I've seen don't have enough pockets.

Steve, you've got to be kidding. Here in the UK our airports are run by a terrible outfit called British Airports Authority (no connection to the airline) and they only allow 1 bag as carry on. That makes it very difficult to take a camera on board and as for 'media privileges' the goons at the security check would laugh out loud. By the way I fit my EX1 into a Kata cc-193 which I used for my Z1 previously and although it's tight everything gets in and it will fit into the overhead locker.

[Michael Slowe] "Here in the UK our airports are run by a terrible outfit called British Airports Authority (no connection to the airline) and they only allow 1 bag as carry on"

What a shame Michael. All of the personnel who work in US airports are some of the most caring individuals that I have ever met. They treat everything as it's their own. "Easy does it" is their mantra. And when we ask them how they've managed to destroy everything they touch, they respond in a very gentle manner, just like talking to grandma.

Part sarcasm and part truth. I'm sure you know which is which. I NEVER allow them to take possession of my gear unless there is no alternative. The last time I did, they tore a viewfinder from a DSR-300 camera and bent the head plate on a $5000 tripod. And they're not responsible for a dime of the damage.

We do, however, get some privileges as I mentioned earlier, IF you get the right person.

Hi Guys,
Long time since I've posted.
I rented my EX3 out for an overseas trip and did not have time/money to buy the PortaBrace or Kata.
So I headed off to the local Menards/Home Depot tool section and found a soft-side tool bag that the EX3 fit into. I brought the camera into the store to be sure.
Next off to the fabric store for some foam and black nylon fabric.
Cut out and hot glued blocks of foam together and covered with the nylon.
Not too bad a job protecting the viewfinder which as you know sticks way out there.

The tool bag rig cost about 60 bucks and functions very nicely. Snug fit with pockets for batteries and media. It even had a carry strap.

Every Airliner has his own sizes. KLM is the best, add together and allowed to 115 cm. The British Airways is the worst. We had to go Mumbai through Heathrow and We have never had so much problems in Heathrow. And we are fluing a lot. Since we have two Sony EX3 we have airline problems. It is a pity that viewfinder is not removeble. We are going to try with Kata 193 with the camera on his side. Sizes Out 54x28x28. I think you refer to Petrol PCUB-HD, but the sizes are too big. Am I wright?
