Rolling Shutter but such lovely footage!!
on Sep 15, 2008 at 8:38:53 pm

Just used my EX1 on it's first paying shoot. Pictures are lovely. Had to deliver SD digibeta in a hurry so used the SDI downconversion from the camera, I think it's lovely what do other people think?

I had one problem though. Shooting in a factory I found some shots with flashing lights and close ups of welding displayed the dreaded rolling shutter..... I reckon if I did a lot of factory shoots I'd be worried.

Are there any tricks to miniimise this? (shutter speed?, flicker setting in camera?)
Didn't even think to worry at the time, will in future..

Johnny

Several people have reported that EX1 firmware update 1.11 fixes this aspect of rolling shutter. I have updated yet but I thought I'd mention it. Basically people are reporting the partial screen photo type flashes are gone.

WOW if that's true I'd be a very happy man. Upgrading soon so I'll find out.
Surprised that Sony didn't make a big thing of it (though maybe they're in denial about the problem ever existing...)

Must say though the pictures are so beautiful you'd forgive almost anything!!

Some who have upgraded to the latest firmware reported that the half-frame flashes are gone, but others have reported no change. Among those who've reported no change is Phil Bloom from the UK.

Don't get your hopes up.

Thanks God I don't film many "flashy' places but I found my workaround if needed.
Shoot interlaced. Then you only need to de-interlace the frames with flashes. The flash just disappear.

I'm afraid the de-interlace trick doesn't always work but it does give an option between very bad and bad (depending on whether I remove odd or even fields).

Hi John,
As I said my flash experience is limited. The de-interlacing probably doesn't work perfect for all the flashes. But at least for the most horrible do the job. Those shocking burnt up band just disapear as never would have existed.
