Read XDCAM EX Files on Mac w/o Camera?

Hi,

I have a bunch of QuickTime MOVs that I believe were filmed w/ a Sony XDCAM EX, however, all I have are the files, not the camera itself. Is there any way for me to view these files?

I only have FCP 5.0x and CS3 AE, and tried the XDCAM EX Clip Browser, but no luck. I can HEAR the files, but need to see them, and hopefully convert them to something I can use (like a more common QuickTime format or even a series of stills).

Any suggestions?

Many thanks,

[Ted Kusio] "I believe were filmed w/ a Sony XDCAM EX"
And if you open them in QuickTime and use the Show Movie Inspector does it display the codec info?

There's good reason why people should be archiving and distributing the BPAV folders and not the MOV files on Mac. You're experiencing one of them. You don't need the camera. The BPAV folders and the FREE Sony Clip Browser would be all you need to play. Clip Browser 2 even has some limited cross convert features too now.

Try playing them back in VLC 086i.

Do you just want to view the files or edit them?

When I open the files in QuickTime, it says they're XDCAM EX 1080p24. They're on a hard drive a video producer gave my company, but there are no BPAV folders.

And, yeah, I'd like to edit them, but viewing would be a start (for now)... I'll try VLC and maybe I can fake something from there. Since I'm not looking for anything high-end, maybe I can screencapture the playback...

Many thanks!

No go using VLC:

main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `xdvd'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

Ironically VLC will play the XDCAM EX MP4 files.

Like I said. Giving someone the XDCAM EX MOV is the wrong way to go. Not everyone has a Mac with FCP 6.0.2 and up.

There are several ways to use the MP4 but the MOV is much more limited.
Try MPEGStreamclip.

I can try all this but my tests wouldn't be indicative since I have FCP 6.0.4 installed.

MPEGStreamclip didn't do it either...
:(

But I appreciate the suggestions!

You can try this
http://www.ffmpegX.com/
It'll convert the MP4 files but I'm not sure about the MOV files though.
