AUTOMATING TRANSITIONS FROM EX1 FILES TO FCP
on Jun 26, 2008 at 5:19:34 pm

I AM TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO ADD TRANSITIONS TO EX1 FILES DIRECTLY IN FCP 6.
I get an error (insufficient content for edit) message. I need to edit every clip in order to add a transition.
Is there some way in FCP to add a handle automatically before I add a transition?
The EX1 files dont have any frames available for adding a transition without editing,
Any ideas?

The handles has to be in the original clip. If you have a 10 seconds clip and want a one seconds transition on start and end, you have to create an 8 sec. subclip and bring that into the sequence.

Well, you don´t need to create a subclip.

Just set in- and outpoint at least 1 sec. in the start to decrease the length of the clip, and add to sequence ...

Do I have to do that in the xd cam transfer program the ex1 or fcp?
Is it too late to create the subclip if I have the original files?

Thanks

In the Viewer, you have to set an in-point and an out-point. Of course this makes the clip shorter. The part before the inpoint and the part after the outpoint will be your handles.

Th manual says "Handles are unused parts of a media" or something like that. I remember my own frustration when started with FCP - I just couldn´t understand ...

So if you have a clip where you really MUST show every frame, then it is impossible make transitions with other clips. Because there must be something in your media that overlaps with the other clips.

Therefore you should leave some seconds before and after your in- and outpoints in order to be able to make transitions.

I understand but say I drag 50 clips from the ex1 to fcp for the first time, is there any way I can add the handles beforehand to make them accept transitions right away without having to edit every clip?

Yes, you probably can if you want to use Apple's Automator app. and are willing to write a script for it. Otherwise, no.
