BBC HD Standards
on Jun 8, 2008 at 9:28:24 am

Hi,

I was reading the standards for the new BBCHD channel

and there is this section:

2.1. The following formats are considered to be standard definition:
o All standard definition video formats
o HDV from all manufactures
o Cameras with image sensors under ½”
o Frame based recording formats below 100Mbs
o Inter-frame based recording formats below 50Mbs
o Super16 film whether transferred to tape in high definition or not
o 35mm film transferred to standard definition tape formats
o Non linear editing codecs with bit rates below 160Mbs
o Live contributions via links at less than 60Mbs (MPEG2)

I take it the EX3 would fall under the category:

o Inter-frame based recording formats below 50Mbs

Thus making it unacceptable?

Leon.

Sounds like it, doesn't it? Perhaps recording to the Flash XDR recorder via HD-SDI would make EX footage acceptable for broadcast.

Don,
I believe the Convergent Design Flash XDR recorder will be a great way to garner beautiful high level HD images with the EX series cameras and I can't wait to get my hands on mine, but wouldn't be nice if Sony could simply add the 50 Mbps 4:2:2 to the EX units. I have heard that there will be an update that will include a 24p signal out of the SDI port. Check this link about 4 minutes in. It makes me think Sony could add the higher XD Cam level if they wanted to.

Its a shame because I don't think Sony offer another handheld product that would comply.

That list is interesting - shooting Super 16 and scanning to 2k is out!

So that would mean that they wuld not broadcast any documenary material that was shot between 1930 and 2002, even if it was remastered. Don't believe it.
What was it that they said about rules and guidelines in Pirates of the Carribbean.?
Okay.
Nonetheless it's still better to shoot with a good camera in a good codec with ample bandwith

or else copy your program to hdcam-sr (the next 10 years no one will notice, if your work is good

Well okay good
But these standards they invented to justify their investments, if or when a "Blair Witch Project" or anything worth while shot on hdv comes along they will show it on the HD channel whenever it looks HDish and people swallow it. (even in England)
So relax and make the best program you can with the equipment you have.

Nonetheless it's still better to shoot on the best possible format you can afford.

P.S. I can tell you stories about U-matic scans of 35mm films copied to 1 inch norm "c (required) and broadcasted.

Off course, If they want they can. The EX-1 is able to record near 100Mbps without problems.

The BBC is on some serious drugs if they think super 16mm transferred to HD, isn't HD! I'd love to know how that got brought up when the list was being made. You're telling me, that video shot on a 1/2 chip camera, at 720p, is better than super 16 shot with an ARRI SR-3, transferred to 1080p or 2k. Really?

I'm all for setting high standards for broadcast, but I think this list was made in haste and needs to be re-visited, or they're not going to have much programming.

they are so full of crap,
watching bbc hd, the noise and artifacting is sooo much worse than anything an ex1 could possibly produce in normal lighting conditions. I wonder how they figure these standards out...
