undelete files from SxS card
on Jun 7, 2008 at 12:31:51 pm

Hi Everyone,

while recording under pressure I did the most stupid thing and deleted the files on my SXS card accidentally...Realizing what I have done, I immediately write protected the card and did not use it again until a solution could be found.
I have purchased several different kinds of undelete software but none works, most just crash!. The only one that does half the job is called ''THE UNDELETE'', it recovers 12GB of an 8GB (yes an 8GB) card. Only some of the clips are playable on Nero 8, but they play without audio and have sync problems. Additionally when they play, I can see the start of the clip, then it goes into a previous job that would have to have been overwritten by the new job, plays a few seconds of that, and returns back to the original clip.
The clips cannot be loaded in to any NLE such as Premiere Pro CS3 version 3.22, Sony Vegas 8B, Edius 4.6.
I know the clips are still there, it only took few seconds to delete them, while it normally takes 5 minutes to just read the whole card!
Sony representatives here don't seem to have the slightest clue on how to retrieve them, yet if you go to Sony website, the company offers free utilities software to retrieve deleted files from all the other cards they sell such as ''sony memory stick, playstation memory cards etc, all except SxS. I would have thought this would be a priority for a professional product!

Any clues guys?

Thanks

Louis

I guess you could send it to a data recovery service. There's a reason they put an erasure prevention tab on there- something to do with Charles Darwin.

I used Boomerang to recover some files I accidentally deleted on a card, and could not get xdcam transfer or clip browser to "see" them. did anyone have any tips.

it's very frustrating to see the .mp4s in the raw folder, and have them not play on my mac with quicktime, or VLC, or ffmpeg. grrrr.

Have you tried using the IMPORT function in ClipBrowser2. It'll take an MP4 and build an new BPAV folder for it. At which point XDCAM Transfer Tool 2.7 will see it.

Thanks for the speedy repy, but unfortunately, the Mac version of Clip Browser doesn't have an import function. Well, it has it, but it seems perpetually greyed out. I don't get it. Any other work arounds, guys?

ClipBrowser2
File/Import. . . .

On Intel Mac (of course) OS 10.5.5 (and worked earlier) ALWAY available (never greyed out). Always allows me to select an orphaned MP4 (any MP4 actually).

I accidently deleted 4 clips one day having a very similar experience and never recovered any more than a few seconds of the clips. The best of all was Boomerang Data Recovery. But I recorded over my clips and I thought that was why it couldn't recovery any more than a couple of seconds. I would think you could find a solution in your situation. When I can I will try deleting a few clips without recording over them with Boomerang and File Salvage to see if they can bring the clips back. That won't be for a couple of days as my camera is out on a job.

Good Luck

Hi micheal,

Did you ever get anywhere with your tests? I've just done the same foolish thing with a nearly full 16gb card. It hurt.

Luckily I realised in time and got the card back off the cameraman before he'd recorded anything over it. I've run boomerang on the card and it seems to have found the files. I'm just wondering if you had any success recovering your files before I shell out $150.

thanks in advance,

s

No I never had any good results working with Boomerang or File Salvage after deleting files from my SxS cards. In fact Boomerang has changed the way they license their product and now they charge per use. I have issues with this company as they sent me an email accusing me of breeching my license agreement as they want to retract all of the licenses with unlimited use like the one I purchased. What a waste of $200. If you really need these clips then the sky is the limit, however I never got one file to ever restore using either of these recovery products and I purchased them both.

Good Luck

Sorry Micheal, just to clarify: When you scanned with boomerang did it pick up any files, and did you recover these only to find they were corrupt, or did it never find the files in the first place.

As I've said boomerang seems to have found all my deleted files, and certainly nothing has been overwritten on the card since I deleletd, although the card did go back into the camera. The files seem so tantalisingly close.

but mayb'e thats just how they make their money...

cheers

s

Boomerang found MP4 files, however it never recovered any of them.

I'd just like to add to this thread. I did the most unbelievably stupid after a shoot yesterday and deleted the footage from a card instead of clearing the external hard drive I wanted to transfer too. I won't make that mistake again!

I downloaded the trial version of Boomerang. It found 500MB of 10GB I had on the card.

Luckily, I had a brain wave and went into the trash bin (Mac Lion) and there was the file! I copied it and pasted it to my desktop (I couldn't 'put it back' as I'd already put new stuff on the card thinking it was the hard drive - only folders mind). All worked out OK.

Before you go and spend money on expensive software, it's worth noting the above!
