Here's the specs:

The PROBLEM:

Capturing seems to go well audio and video during capture seem nice and silky-smooth. Then, when reviewing what was captured, the audio in the clips is off-sync and contains some really nasty dropouts/pops that render the audio unusable. Another seasoned editor I know has seen this problem also, but can't remember the remedy.

MAC:

-MacPro Dual 3 GHz with 5GB of RAM
-Final Cut Pro 2 (brand new and up to date)
-AJA - Kona LhE

CAPTURE SETTINGS:

1080i60 29.97 8-bit (I've tried 10-bit and proRES as well)

THE DECK:

Sony HDCAM J-H3
Settings: VITC/LTC
Video: Hooked up via component
Audio: Hooked up via XLR to 1/4" into my Mackie Board. the board is then 1/4" to XLR into the KONA
*I've also hooked up straight XLR to XLR into the Kona Box. Same reults.

How do I capture clean and on-sync audio?

Thanks much,

Dave Distefano

Are you sure this problem is not on your original tape? I am sure you already took that out of your equation.

The noises/dropouts are NOT in the source. The source is absolutely pristine. Yes, that was checked out early on.

Rocket,

I've had the same issue in Premiere Pro 2.0 with MainConcept plug-in. The worse case was transcoding the MPEG to an AVI and dropping that into a Cineform project.

Interestingly enough, in my case, if I turn off the video track the audio plays fine. I heard something about video memory buffer issues causing this, and since turning off the video track made a difference, this sounded reasonable. So I fooled around with the video memory buffer, but sadly to little effect.

Aloha Dave,

You've probably already checked this, but you need to have have an external sync generator to both the Kona card and deck and have the Kona sync set to REF IN and not to Freerun. If this isn't the problem, then I'm out of ideas.

Aloha,

Ken
