New XDCAM HD for NAB - 1/2" not 2/3"
on Apr 11, 2007 at 5:49:14 am

Freelancers on B-roll.net are reporting that Sony has sent freelancers info about the new XDCAM HD to be announced at NAB. It will be 50mbs 4:2:2 and will definitely be 1/2", not 2/3". The new 1/2" camera offers quote "4:2:2 processing and increased data capture of up to 50 Mbps (from the current limit of 4:2:0 at 35 Mbps). MPEG-2 and its inherent long GOP structure will continue to be supported. A dual-layer Blu-ray disc will offer 100 minutes of record time.

This new functionality won

[Peter Corbett] "It's hard to say what effect not releasing a 2/3" XDCAM HD for at least a year will have on the market."

I agree. 1/2" limits what lenses I can rent for long and wide shots. My rental houses mostly carry 2/3" lenses.

For what its worth... My Sony connection said no 2/3 inch this NAB... It would be great if he is wrong or not telling all, but he said yes to some unexpected (but not HUGE) announcements related to the existing product line. I took this as a hint to other gear, or dual layer disc... but it could be as cool as 50mbs and 4:2:2.... Guess we'll see soon enough.

As far as the demo went - I'm hoping to get some nice A/B tests with the Canon HD lens vs. a 2/3 SD lens - see just how soft it is...

Thanks,
Harry.

Harry, What are you demo are you referring to here? I'd be very interested in these results. The Canon and Fuji HD lenses are so much more expensive than the SD lenses. The picture I get with my SD lenses on my HD cameras is beautiful. I have trouble imagining how much better it can look. Please keep me keep me informed. Thank you so much.

Thomas

We have a Sony DSR-500 2/3" 16x9 camera with a $10K lens on it. When we install the lens from our F-900, it is an amazing difference. SO, when someone says that the glass doesn't make much of a difference, I ask that they take their rig to someone who has an HD lens and a good monitor and see for them selves.

Even with 1/2 inch chips, recording at 50Mbit, 4:2:2 is a much better use of that camera. A 2/3 inch imager would give the price a nice bump as well. One of the great advantages of XDCam is it's cost. Taking the price point between HDV and HDCam, the 1/2 inch chips fit.

This information is all wrong. Sony ARE going to announce a 2/3rd XDCAM HD camcorder. It is this new 2/3rd model that is 50Mbps and 4:2:2 colour space, but no variable frame rate.

The new 2/3rd camera is still 4:2:0 colour and 35Mbps, but it does take the new 50GB discs as it has dual-focus laser. But it does not come with a viewfinder and it is going to be

I can't find info of a 2/3" XDCAMHD camera in Sony's press releases.

Yes I heard today that the price for the 2/3" will be quite low, but I assume that doesn't include a VF. Maybe sales pressure from Panasonic and (down the track) Grass Valley have forced the price down.

It will include 2' BW VF.
I have to say with that block inside,it might be a direct competition to HDCAM 900R....but does not record 24 frames.

That won't be a serious problem for us PAL 25P users but I can see it's an issue for the 24P players up north.
