transcode XDCAM HD to DVCPRO HD (and the 2/3 inch XDCAM HD)

I know what I'm proposing might just be crazy talk. But considering that XDCAM HD is a higher rate of HDV, is it an appropriate or even doable workflow to capture the files and convert to DVCPRO HD to get it into a frame based codec as opposed to long GOP? capturing via a Kona LH has been the workflow for converting regular HDV.

Also with Panasonic announcing a 2/3 chip ENG P2 camera yesterday for the amazing price of $14K, does that mean a new 2/3 offering in the XDCAM HD family could be just around the corner? with Panasonics aggressive pricing perhaps the rumours of the price of the 2/3 Sony offering being closer to HDCAM could be revised?

also in this rumoured but so far unannouced, 2/3, 50mbs, 4:2:2 XDCAM HD camcorder will the codec still be Mpeg Long GOP or frame based?

NDA's aside anyone have any comments or thoughts on the trends of where this technology could be going?

thanks

Have a look at the new Grass Valley Infinity. For mid-20's you get;

3 x 2.4 million pixel CMOS
1920 x 1080 native capture, true progressive and interlace
2" 16:9 Viewfinder
10-bit 75mbs - 100mbs recording in JPEG2000 codec (SD and HD)
SD 625 and 525 operation
DV and MPEG-2 in SD and HD
HD-SDI, SDI output AND input
Bluetooth USB 2.0, Firewire, Gigabit LAN onboard
Capture to cheap Iomega REV dics and Compact Flash cards.

I want to see if Sony launches the 2/3" XDCAM HD, but I wonder if the price will justify the return. NAB07 will be very interesting.

I was about to say that the Infinity was due about 9 months ago, and is smelling like vaporware.

BUT, I followed your first link about the "Xenium" sensor, and it appears the Inifnity has been held up because they're upgrading to this new CMOS sensor.

There was a rumor a little while ago that the sensor in the Infinity had a pretty low pixel count. This new info gives that rumor credence. Glad to see new CMOS sensors coming as well...I like them things.

Hi Nate,

Do you mean give credence, as in not true? ;0)

Credence as in, it was so low that they decided it needed fixing and that has been one of the reasons the camera has been delayed.

Honestly, it doesn't matter. They're saying what it is now, so it sure doesn't matter what it might have been a year ago. I also think it's a smart move on their part to have waited for a better sensor, if they did...things seem to be happening uber fast with CMOS sensors at the moment. JVC did the same thing when they decided to can their full-size HD camera.
