Iv'e been searching the web for hours, trying to see if there is anything of help to my problem:
When using syriac: ܠܝܫܢܐ ܣܘܪܝܐ (for a demonstration), the text becomes broken - compare:
ܠ ܝ ܫ ܢ ܐ ܣ ܘ ܪ ܝ ܐ
The first line is joined text, the standard for the language, and how it appears in word - the second is how it appears in indesign (although without the large spacing).
I do not have this problem with Arabic - although that may be a result of the fonts available - the Syriac fonts have no kerning pairs - but have their own place on the unicode table. They are opentype fonts and can be seen here.. http://www.bethmardutho.org/meltho/
