Downstream keying and ChromaKey on BlackMagic ATEM

Hey Guys,

Brand new here. I've done a bit of searching and I can't find anything definitive on my question.

Does the ATEM TVS have downstream keying with chromakey built in? I have a graphics computer that will output lower thirds with dynamic text in them. I want that to be one of my inputs and to be keyed over my cameras, even when I transition between camera a and b.

To be clear, I can't put these lower thirds into the media bin and use the media player, it must be from a live input.

Can the atem TVS do this?If not, does the ATEM productions studio 4k do this?

Thanks!

Hello Nathan. The ATEM Downstream Keyers are linear keys only and do not have chroma key capability. To do what you want you could use the Upstream Keyer Chroma Key on the TVS (or any model) and still be able to transition between backgrounds as you indicate. Once the Chroma Key is On Air, disable the "Key" button and enable the "Backgrund" button and you will be able to switch and transition as you wish. The Chroma Key source may be any input on the switcher, not just from he media pool. I hope this helps.

Gary,

Thanks, that helps alot. Since you work at blackmagic, could I ask why none of the switchers have chroma-key as a DSK? Is it due to the price point or am I asking for a uncommon feature?

Good question. While I cannot answer exactly why, I have some observations. It would definitely add cost. Using a chroma key in this way is a compromise since you cannot use the key color in your graphic. What most people do for this type of key is to provide a key and fill signal separately which allows any image in the fill and will work on all downstream or upstream keyers without using more complex chroma keying.

Gary,
That makes sense. Thanks for the information.
