Converting HD/SDI or HDMI to USB for Conferencing
on Jan 15, 2015 at 7:39:10 pm

I am not sure this is the correct pouch of this forum to ask this but since we will be using an ATEM mixer at the source location, maybe it is.

We want to convert an HD/SDI or HDMI video signal to be used with conferencing software such as Fuze. My understanding is that webcams put out a different signal type so that the signal can get toggled by conferencing software up and down in quality to address the needs of bandwidth when conferencing. Is there a conversion device that converts HD/SDI or HDMI to USB so a pro video camera can be seen by conferencing programs? The reason we want to do this and will want to used Fuze is that there will be a remote location that will ask questions at times. Streaming is out because of the delay.

We will use a Mac laptop, so another question is can this be accomplished with conferencing software over the thunderbolt connection or does conferencing software only recognize signals coming through USB?

Thanks for your help in this and let me know if there is a better place you imagine I might post this?

Webcams belong to a USB device class called UVC (Universal Video Class). Most professional capture cards with SDI inputs aren't UVC devices. However there are a couple of UVC devices on the market that accept SDI and/or HDMI inputs like the Magewell XI100DUSB-SDI or the Vaddio AV Bridge

That is fabulous. The Magewell device looks like what we were looking for. Thanks!

Well Fuze responded with this but it doesn't say that it won't work:

"Thanks for contacting Fuze in regards to your question. Currently with Fuze, we support the use of web cameras within the application. At this time unfortunately, we do not support the use of capture devices. With so many variations of capture devices available on the market, we've been unable to test these devices against or application to determine if they will work. We hope to provide this functionality in the future possibly. We're very sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you."
