I have a plan to use a 2012 Macbook Air as a mobile edit/remote station, but will need it to perform a few tasks in the office as well.
It will need to run (lid can be closed) - an external monitor, a blackmagic SDI box, and an external USB3 disk array.
At first, I had planned to buy a belkin docking station - which would allow me to hook the monitor up with a HDMI adapter and loop thunderbolt through to the blackmagic ultrastudio express. But they dropped the HDMI, and now there is only one thunderbolt out - forcing a choice between display OR another thunderbolt peripheral.
Then, I figured I could use a USB3 SDI solution - such as the ultrastudio SDI, only to find out that OSX wasn't yet supported. In fact, it seems people are having trouble getting the USB3 working on many different hardware platforms.
My main use for this at the office will be running scopebox through SDI, though it will perform a number of tasks to assist my main workstation.
I won't be able to use a USB display solution - this is for video work; and a thunderbolt PCIE chassis feels like overkill, when I really just need a dock.
So has anyone found a solution (other than the apple thunderbolt display) for running a DVI display & another thunderbolt peripheral? If the price exceeds $600 - I suppose I might as well just purchase an additional mac-mini. Or wait for blackmagic to release new drivers!
