Black Magic Decklink SDI hates Radeon?
on Jul 2, 2012 at 1:15:26 am

I'm having a bizarre problem trying to use AMD/ATI Radeon cards with my Blackmagic Decklink SDI. First the specs:

Mac Pro 4,1 2009
2 x 2.26 8 core
48gb Ram
CalDigit Raid Card & HD Element RAID
OSX 10.7.4

Here's my problem: If I use Nvidia cards like a GTX 285 or a GT120 (or both), the BM SDI card shows up and works correctly. It shows up in the Hardware Report/PCI Cards in Slot 4. I can change options with the BM Preference Panel.

If introduce any Radeon card (I've tried a 4870, a 5770 and a 6850) either alone or with an Nvidia card, the BM card vanishes from the system report and is no longer recognized by the BM Preference Panel. It is completely MIA.

To test whether it's the BM Card, the System, or something else I've done the following:

1) Installed the BM card in a different Mac Pro (2,1) with each of the Radeon Cards. It works with all of them!

2) Used a brand new clean install of OSX 10.7.4 Lion on an external Firewire drive and booted it with and without the BM 9.5.3 drivers. It doesn't work either way. This says to me that my original desktop system software is not to blame. The external system boot works with the Nvidia and not with Radeon.

3) Moved the BM card to another slot. It works with Nvidia. It doesn't with Radeon. This says to me that there's nothing wrong with my PCI slots.

I'm stumped. I've called BM tech support and they had no idea what it could be. I don't understand how THREE different Radeon cards (2 of them official Apple cards) could cause the BM card to disappear completely from the system check. Could it be a faulty chip on the BM Card?

I've been using this BM card with my Nvidia setup and it's been flawless. But I want to combine the Radeon card as a GUI and use the 285 as a GPU card for a Resolve setup and also use it for FCPX and After Effects.

Any thoughts on what might be going on?

Hi,

we use ATI AMD Radeon cards together with the Decklink HD Extreme in the Mac Pro. Anything works fine.

But If understand you correctly you want to use AMD card and Nvidia in the same System at the same time??? Thats not recommended by the GPU manufacturers. I think the main issue is not your BM Decklink SDI card, I guess its your combination. Beside of that the PCI-Lanes are limited, so you have to find out which slots has which PCI-Lanes (x1 x4 x8 x16)
The GPU card wants always x8 or x16, the BM Decklink SDI uses x1 Speed

Another issue is maybe the power supply, because these old GTX285 are consuming horrible more power compared to the latest GTX685.

Thats one reason for the "CUBE" PCI-Expander, it has its own powersupply and lets you run 4 NVidia Tesla Boards...

Cheers.
Gunter.

I have 2 systems that have 5770 + Decklink Pro HD and one with a Decklink Pro HD DL and it works ok. With 5,1 Mac Pro. I had a 4,1 like yours, but that had the Decklink + GT120 & GTX285... never had an ATI in the 4,1 Mac Pro.

Only thing I could think of is that its a power or corrupted driver issue? I know you said that it was a clean install, but you neve know. Try resetting the PRAM several times in a row. cmd+opt+P+R on reboot.
