Has anyone ever tried RS422 control with a Blackmagic H.264 encoder using an Addenda RS422 to LANC converter? I've got a bunch of DV footage that needs to be digitized to H.264 for analysis and the source deck this user has is a DSR-11. The DSR-11 has no RS422 control, but it does have LANC. Anyone use a LANC to RS422 converter to allow machine control of these devices? I just need simple machine control-start, stop, etc. to prevent the encoder from recording endlessly if a user forgets to check that the tape has ended.

On FCP you can use FireWire as the deck control and capture via the capture card. Can you do that with your system?

Unfortunately we aren't using an editing application like FCP.

One has to use the Blackmagic application to control the H.264 encoder and we have to use the RS422 control that the device has on-board. The Blackmagic application doesn't see Firewire devices or allow them to be controlled via FireWire.

The goal here was to allow users to digitize a large quantity of MiniDV source tapes to H.264 (MP4) in real time.

The Blackmagic app will allow "wild" non machine controlled digitization, but if we had machine control then in and out points can be set or a max duration entered so the system doesn't continue to record after the tape has ended. FCP doesn't see the BlackMagic device as a input source- I wish Blackmagic or someone else had written an driver for that. It's looking like the solution is going to be finding a RS422 controllable DV playback device like a DSR-40 etc.
