HD Extreme vs. ......
on Oct 6, 2009 at 3:38:04 pm

Hi all,

I need to assemble my new NLE and I'm considering 2 options.

For those that have choosed the HD Extreme vs. a Aja Xena LHi,
what is the reason(s) for that choice?

I give maximal importance on video image quality.

What kind of work do I do:
- 50% PremierePro
- 50% Combustion
Documentaries, Corporate, Pub TV Spots.

I shoot with a Sony Z1.
Preview SD on a Sony PVM-20L4
Will buy a Consumer LCD from Sony, Samsung or LG with HDMI input for 1920x1080.
Plan to get a BlackMagic UltraScope.

Any advice / recomandation is very, very welcome.

Thanls,
Carlos

Hello Carlos,

Which frame rates, resolutions are you working with? I presume you are shooting tape or hard-drive to the Z1 Sony camera. And then importing these into your edit, or converting the captures into Blackmagic files?

Thanks,

Leo

Leo,

Right now I only work in PAL SD.
I have a PC with Premiere 6.5 + TARGA 3000 + Win2K.
A betacam J-30 connected to this system.

A laptop (P4 3.2GHZ) with Premiere CS3.

I capture from the Z1 (via FW) on PP CS3 to an external USB drive (yes USB).
I do almost all the the editing CS3. Some compositing on C4 on the T3K PC- because of the video output.

Sometimes I re-capture HDV in HD mode and use the 1440x1080 size to do some zooms and similar stuff.

I will keep this way of work.
Capture from the Z1 camera (maybe with CineForm) on a FireWire port in DV or HDv.
Capture some material that still comes in Beta tapes (each day less...)
Edit inside PP CS4 and compositing on Combustion.

I NEED to have a good video out. Almost 90% of my films have ColorCorrection. So I need proper video out and monitor
I know that each day I will use less the Betacam SD tapes.

For monitoring I will keep my Sony PVM-20L4 monitor for SD PAL, and will get a good consumer LCD TV with HDMI input for HD preview.

I know that with a nice laptop with a FW port and a ┬źn HDMI port I can do 90% of my work, but I want to have also SDI or at least YUV HD out.
I also plan to get a BlackMagic UltraScope.

With the T3K I have REAL TIME editing in SD YUV 422 (4 layers)
The system gets a bit slower with a couple of DV layers.
Quite unstable with MPEG-I frame.
This is the reason for the CineForm codec in my mind.

I wnat to work in HD (1920x1080) with 3 or 4 layers in RT.
The option for 2K can be nice in the future, but I feel that if I upgrade one day, I will go from HD to 4K skiping the 2K. But that day is quite far !

To work with the best laptop of the world and an external box like Matrox MXO2 is not very welcome for me and also for my clients.

What advices can you give me?
- best board for me
- best GPU (do I really need a Quadro FX)
- Core i7 or Dual Xeon
- is Cineform a good option
- ...
- ...
- ...

Thanks a lot
Carlos

I use a HP XW8600 with 8gb of Ram check here
http://www.caldigit.com/Testimonials/SyncFilms/index.asp

I think the Cineform and timeline monitoring is being worked on for CIneform to support using the Blackmagic cards to import/timeline monitor the footage like with the AJA Xena cards.

Sounds like you just need to import Betacam footage, and monitor your HDV footage from the timeline. Decklink Studio looks fine for what you want to do. Also has the HMDI connections as well.

I was reading on the forum a user was using this setup with good results.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P
Cpu: Intel i7 920 D0 stepping
Graphics: Sparkle Geforce 9800 GTX+ 512Mb
Disks: 5 Sata Internal Disks
Memory: 8Gb DDR3

Thanks,

Leo
