"Could not save because of a disk error"

I have been getting this error message lately. I don't think it's a disk problem because no other programs have any problems. Doing a "Save for Web" works fine. It's an intermittent problem. Anyone have any insights?

You may just need to run a disk utility such as norton. Save for web could be working, because it requires less disk spcae to save and does nto encounter the bad blocks.

Phothsop uses alot of hard disk space for virtual memory, so this is why other programs might not act funny. Try to also throw out some old fiules you donto use to free up some of the space on disk.

IF you stll have teh problem try yo just make a new docunment and save it in various formats,so we can get some more symptoms knowing which or if does nto like to save in any format except using save for web.

Also try to reset your Phtohsop Prefs by holding down shift Alt Ctrl[shift option command] right after clicking to boot Photoshop.

Thanks for the response. It shouldn't be a matter of disk space, since this a relatively new G5 with 128GB of space. The FW drive I save to as a backup has less than 1GB. Also, it seems to be the source file that's the problem. I can't save any version - No psd, no jpg, no pct, nothing. Can't renumber, can't rename. Someone else mentioned this a while back, to no a avail, so I was wondering whether someone had come up with an explanation or a fix since then.

I can always repair permissions, I suppose.

So it is just that one file, that narrows the possibilities.

Save for web strips out a few things: paths, preview icon, channels, makes it RGB. So try as a test deleting each one of those things manually and saving your file. If that still does nto work try to flatten your file and save as to see if you can save it as a document with a new name.

Once we find what area it does not like it is easier to see if it is a complex clipping path. Using /:*?>< % in filenames or even layer names is not recomended, so lookout for that.

Good Luck let us know if you find the solution.

It's not just this file. It seems to be intermittent. I tried flattening and renaming the file, but no good. No illegal file or layer names; I have some layer masks, but no clipping paths.

Still a mystery.

Does the file always work if you do save for web? Your drive has plenty of free space, so that should not be the problem, but run Disk Utility (in your Applications/utilities folder)or Norton on your hard drives which run your application, save you files to, and where your cache might be set to.

When I did the tech support for ad agency of mac photohsop users, interittent disk errors usually occured by the hard disk having major errors from Norton. Another similar case was with a custom color profile we had which conflicted with colorsync 3.01.

So far it always works when "save for web" - usually as a png. I don't use Norton - from what I gather, it doesn't play well with OSX. I have Disk Warrior, but it's a kludge to use it with Panther.

I'll do the disk utilities and see what happens.

Thanks, Mike.
