A CHEAP mic for good audio.
by Justin Leyba on Nov 7, 2009 at 8:34:00 pm

Hi..

I have a Sony Hdr-Fx7 camera and it doesn't have any XLR inputs. It only supports mini plug. I'm thinking of buying this:

or

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Rode-Microphones-VideoMic-Shotgun-Condenser-Mic...

Which do you guys recommend? Or anything else that's not on my list.
Additional question... Can I use a handheld mic as a Boom Mic or Shotgun mic??

Thanks guys!

What's your budget? Because in general the cheap mics sound cheap...

I would buy a Beachtek adaptor, then rent a good mic or two as needed until you can afford to own them.

Hey Justin,

I'll vouch for the VideoMic. Yes, you can do better, but for the price it's a solid piece of kit. I'm really pleased with mine.

I can't speak to the Azden bundle, but two mics and a wireless transmitter/receiver for that price does seems almost too cheap...

As for your second question, not really... an omni handheld mic is designed to pick up close-by sounds from all directions, where as a shotgun picks up sounds in a focused direction (close and at a distance).

Hope that helps,

Gord
