Shooting a documentary overseas

I'm going to Japan to shoot a documentary within the next month and I was looking for advice, especially for shooting laws.
I'm touring with a band who are touring Japan for the first time as a support band. Do I need to ask for permission to shoot a documentary overseas? I have a very basic kit and it could pass for just shooting tourist videos.
I have release forms in English and will try to get them translated into Japanese soon. Must of the gigs will be at venues at bars except for the last two. If I get there and say It's fine to shoot there, should I care about release forms? Will I have to track down the owner of the venue, who may not even be at the venue and get them to sign a release form? I also will be shooting at a couple of music festivals, but will permission to shoot as part of the headlining band's entourage do? Will I have to track down the organizers or even the owner of the land which the festivals are on and get their permission?
I'm starting to worry, as I am the camera and sound man on this job, I haven't shot overseas before and I haven't done production work before; I'm coming along as an invitation from the band's manager and we're funding this ourselves.
Any advice would be great!
