close FCP
open AJA Control Panel
open INPUT tab
click on ANALOG, and then COMPOSITE
put your VTR Video composite output into the Y input of the LHe
go back to the AJA Control Panel
click on Control tab
change setting from Test Pattern to Input Passthrough.
Monitor the output of the LHe on your TV monitor.
Push play on your VTR

its working now, but when its monitoring through pass through or on the
monitor I'm seeing horizontal random thick and thin green lines. my
decklink does this too, though both capture the video and its not on there.
I wonder why that is...not a deal breaker but annoying when monitoring
it with a client in the room.
the captured video on the kona looks worse than the decklink.
the kona introduces some random fine checker board patterns and subtle horizontal
stripes when i step through some captured vhs frame by frame...the decklink (multibridge extreme)
does not.

your Decklink AND your Kona LHe do the same thing ? Gee, I bet it's something else in your system !
If you are capturing VHS (that is what you said - correct ?), you need a TBC FRAME SYNCHRONIZER after the VHS machine (or any unstable sync source). The deal breaker is you not owning the right equipment. Buy an inexpensive Frame sync, and your problems will go away.

I noticed it was better when I passed the vhs signal through
the BR-HD50U dv deck. The composite out on that deck is clean.
and by the way, upgrading from the mac g5 to the nehalem fixed
that weird problem I had a few months back where deck control
for capturing 720P 59.94 from that BR-HD50U deck would only work through the keyspan
serial adapter for rs-422.
now I just use the kona's rs-422 and its not a problem.
