What's the word? The footage was shot on VariCam. Would it be better to use the Teranex Mini with noise reduction or the Kona 3 to convert from DVCPROHD original source tape?

We'll be digitizing to uncompressed 10-bit and grading in Color for a digital cinema release?

The show has been digitized over firewire so I'm open to any software conversions that would upconvert to, but I have a feeling that either the Kona 3 or the Teranex would be best.

720 to 1080i is perfect with a Kona. We've been doing that for about 6 months now with our Kona 3 and haven't had any issues whatsoever. Though I actually prefer capturing / editing in 720p and then make the cross conversion during the Mastering process, but 720p does not support Drop Frame in FCP. So we now cross convert during capture.

If you can edit in 720p and then cross convert the master timeline at the end, you end up with smaller file sizes.

To the visible eye, the Kona 3 just looks a little cleaner. No way to describe it, but I just think it does a slightly better job than both the 1200A and the 1400.

Wouldn't deck sent it out at 60p to the teranex. The teranex upconverts it at 60P. Then the Kona card would remove the duplcate frames from the upconverted 1080P files? (I guess the teranex might remove the DVCPROHD flags)

We'll I'm leaning towards using the Kona 3 for it now.

the Terenax Mini does not support any 24frame content at any frame size.

there would be no flags.

FWIW - I've specifically tested the Mini versus Kona2 (480i and 720p/59.94 to 1080i) and the Mini delivered superior results. I've also tested the Mini against the internal upconvert of the 1200A and there, too, the Mini delivered a better image. AFAIK, the current Mini doesn't work with 24p natively, unless something's changed in the latest revs. I would add, though, that 720 to 1080 isn't as big of a visible difference as 480 to 1080, so if budget is a factor, then the deck or the Kona will be just fine.

I'm still a little confused about what is being said about the Teranex not supporting 24P. The confusion is that I wouldn't be sending 24P video to it. I would connect it to the HDSDI output of the Panasonic 1200 deck. Then connect the output of the Teranex to the computer.

In other works, I wouldn't be sending 24P video to it. It'd be sending 59.94 video to it (with a 2:3 pattern of duplicate frames, but it's still 59.94). Then wouldn't it upconvert the video at 59.94, leaving the duplicate frames intact? Then would a Kona card be able to remove the duplicate frames? (if not, I guess I'd be capturing at 1080/60P to uncompressed!!!! That's scary.) But the Teranex wouldn't have anything to do with 24P?

as I said it be before there would not be any flags for the Kona card to see.


As oliver said, you are better off using the Kona 720p24 to 180 24sf conversions since the tool you want to use does not support the workflow you propose.

the mini does not support 1080 60p either ( damn few devices do) your pass thru would give you 1080 60i and when the Kona can convert directly to 1080 24sf.

do you really want to screw up that nice progressive footage by taking it into interlace and back to progressive?
