Component capture question
by Chris Poisson on May 15, 2007 at 4:44:16 pm

With any of the HDV cameras with component out, capturing via Kona LH, is there a discernable difference in quality by going through a converter to SDI and then going into the LH? If so, which converter box would be the best?

Why go SDi when you can capture analog component? Less conversion happening when going analog.

HI Jeremy,

Just asking if there would be an advantage to letting another box do the digital conversion.

There should be no difference. You aren't adding quality by adding more conversion.

The LH only has only balanced analog audio XLR ins and outs.
Wouldn't the OP need a balancing box to amplify the camera's RCA outputs
from consumer -10 db up to line level balanced, or the AJA HD10AVA
which takes the component video and unbalanced audio and outputs
an SDI stream for the LH?

Oops, my mistake, the HD10AVA only has balaqnced XLR inputs.
Any suggestions?

Yep, a mixer. Doesn't the AVA account for this though? I thought you could select the input level via dipswitch but maybe I am wrong.

Checked this out both on product page and Manual.
Audio choices are only +10dBu, +12dBu, +18dBu, +24dBu

HD10AVA produuct page:

HD10AVA manual:

Hmmm, the manual mentions the consumer level as +12. That's what I was thinking of and I think that should help in the level boost.

You're still stuck with the fact the inputs to the HD10AVA are balanced XLR connectors.
Unless you have a pro camera, the outputs are always RCA unbalanced.

Something like the Matchbox from Henry Engineering would take the unbalanced low level
from the RCA outputs and provide the high level balanced XLR outs suitable for the LH.

you don't need the Henry matchbox. The HD10AVA has dip switches to compensate for the -10dB inputs. You just need the correct RCA to XLR cable to get into the HD10AVA (or a small mixer). Don't turn this into rocket science. Get some cables from Martertek, and be done with it. You aint' gonna solve this at Radio Shack.

Chris -
AJA makes converters for a living. These converters are part of your Kona card (the MAC does not process analog video !). You already own the converter that you need.

Hey Bob,

That's what I thought, just making sure...

BTW nice review on the Convergent Design HDMI box, really enjoyed that.

Chris -
I know exactly what you are asking - "if I compare item, A, B, C, D, and E, which is the absolute best quality".

I can't answer this question honestly. I use AJA products all day long in every installation, be it FCP or AVID. With that said, I put a Convergent Design HD-Connect-MI on the output of a Sony HVRM-25U HDV VTR into an AVID Adrenaline HD, and the quality in the AVID was better than any other type of capture. So, how does this relate to the Kona LHe. I don't know. These are all great products (just like there are lots of great monitors on the market these days). Which one is the absolute best - I can't honestly answer that question, without having all products side by side. And you know what Chris - if your client, or TV station that needs to receive your material doesnt' have these items side by side, no one will be able to tell the difference. They are all good products.

Hey Bob,

Gotta trust the madman in you for the most sane advice. All too true, thanks!
