p24 directly from VariCAM to Kona2?
by pixeleyed on Feb 14, 2006 at 7:35:24 pm

At last found the answer to a question I raised here quite some time ago. So if anyone wondered (as I did for a long time) wheather you can capture anyting but 720p60 directly from a Varicam (not a DVCPRO HD deck, the CAM) with the Kona2 to FCP, here's the answer:

The Varicam outputs only p60 from the camera, no matter what you shot the footage at. p24 / p30 / p12, whatever gets pulled down to p60 and that streams out of the HD SDI. However, the duplicate frames on the pulldown to p60 are marked in the last 2 bits of UBit TC. Panasonic has a free FCP plugin on their website that allows you to convert the captured p60 footage to the actual shot framerate by detecting the marks in the UBit.
Here's a URL:
http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ModelDetail?storeId...

Thus, capture at p60 (or 59,9X), and then throw away the dupe frames with the FRAME RATE CONVERTER plugin. Throw onto a timeline with your needed framerate and ride into the sunset.

I'm just curious, why would you ever capture from a VariCam camera? I would never even think to do this with the low cost of the 1200A deck.

Let's just say there are people in HD land with SD bugets for now. Not having to rent a deck makes some people smile. But yes. My wishlist is in and a 1200A sure is on it.

Yeah, I'm working with some of those same people, but I would NEVER capture footage from a VariCam. The 1200A has easily paid for itself with the myriad of projects that it does. That's the beauty of the 1200A, it's so reasonably priced that it doesn't take all that many "SD budget" jobs to pay for it.

I am sure that the camera mechanism was not really built for the bulk capturing from source tapes.

I feel for the owner of that camera. The VTR section must be taking a beating.

I don't think they are talking about using the camera as a deck, I think they are referring to capturing from the HDSDI right out of the camera while you are shooting. Supposedly, this output is a 10bit spigot that outputs the HD signal before it hits DVCPRO HD compression. You would do this if you were going to record straight to d5 or to harddrive right from the varicam. Mostly, high end film compositing and green screen applications, I think, would benefit most from this workflow.

For example, if you took your frame buffer on set, walter, and captured uncompressed for super duper high end green screen right off of the varicam.

the video stream is always 720p60 --it does not matter if it is a Varicam sending the data or a deck. YOU CAN record the VFR's RP188 data from the video stream/. It can be captured via the 720p60 video via a kona board at what ever frame rate you shot the footage at regardless of whether a deck or a camera is sending that signal.

I do it regularly. USE the the Kona 23.98 Varicam easy set up --the board will then only accept the flagged frames on ingest as long as there no conflicts in the video stream TC stream < broken TC, bars etc) that can cause the capture to fail. I have done this in every frame rate and ramp from 1- 60 frames, and showed it at the Varicamps when ever possible.

one reason to use this workflow is for Green screen or heavy compositing, Addenda makes an HSDSI to Serial converter that allows the Kona boards to accept the RS422 serial control.

Hey Gary, can you point us to a link? I've been looking for something like this and addenda's site doesn't seem to have it, unless of course I am totally missing it. Does this device work with the tc out of the Varicam, or does it actually take timecode out of the HD-SDI?
