I just finished an 844x project and I've promised the client to archive the media for easy access in the future. I had to pull from many sources that I will not have easy access to again.
I expect to move to an FCP based system some time in the next 6 months. Will I be able to access 844x media on an FCP system? Is there a plug in that will allow that?
If not I plan to batch convert the files, probably using compressor (since that's what I have). What file format would you suggest? I'd like to maintain quality, have a standard compatible format, and not be as huge as animation full quality would be. Yes, I want it all.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Marion

Hi Marion,
By far the easiest way to do this is to record your files back to tape. Then batch that back into FCP. There's no easy way to translate an 844/X timeline to an FCP one. Even EDL will be problematic if you don't have access to the original sources.
Intel Macs will not be able to work with the 844/X codec, so if you plan to do a batch convert do it on a Windows box or PPC Mac.
With regards to codec, PhotoJPEG works nicely with FCP. It's lossy, so just be aware of that, but it'll keep a good quality.
It will be painful now, though I suspect even more painful if you don't do it carefully now and come back to it in six months :o)
Cheers,
Ben
