Realtime Chroma Key option for Final Cut (DVCPRO 50 and better)
by dAlen Johnson on Jul 9, 2008 at 4:10:02 pm

Years back I used Pinnacle Cinewave on the Mac with Final Cut Pro to give me realtime Chroma key for DVCPRO 50.

Would never go back after editing with this, relatively affordable, method.
(Compared to the alternatives back in the days which was Avid Symphony I believe.)

The other low end options were Kona and black magic (I believe, could be wrong) but they did not give real time chroma keying for finalcut pro for DVCPRo 50.

Now my question is quite simple really, after giving a bit of back history -
I have been out of the video field for about 3+ years and am looking at getting back into it.

Knowing that Pinnacle Cinewave is dead (am I not right) for Final Cut Pro) are there other options out there for real time chroma key for HD?
- Yes, I know HD is not DVCPRO 50...Im looking at stepping up. ;)

I know that there are HD cards, but what about realtime keying...again, once you get spoiled, its hard to go back.

What is the best options, or is there any, for Final Cut HD for realtime chroma key?

Thanks

dAlen

p.s.
I tried to post the other day, but it didnt get posted for some reason - hopefully this gets up.

I'm sure there are. Although, honestly, I don't know what you mean by real time chromakey. I have a product called VeeScope Live that's supposed to give you real time chromakey previews.

By "Final Cut HD", what version do you mean?

Hello Eric,

Thanks for the response.

Basically here is what I mean by real time chroma key.

Have a shoot in the studio against a green-screen with DVCpro 50 and then take it into an edit suite (final cut) - and you can pop out (take out) the green and put whatever you want behind it and play it without having to render it. This is what Cinewave did years back.

So now that they were sold off, and some time has passed, I figured that maybe there were/are companies offering the same capabilities with DVCPRo 50 and now HD. (Taking off where Cinewave left off)

I have read around and people have a different take on chroma key and realtime based on how or what they use it for in their work flow.
Some people dont see a need in it, but for me its artistic freedom to take material and play with it how I want without rendering. :)

Basically I story board live -

From what I have gathered, Im not sure that there is a card that does this now.
But it appears that the cards may help what Final Cut started years back when I stopped using it...RT Effects. (and chroma I think became one of them.)

Some issues with this, however.
One particular one is that Final Cuts keying was horrible...and I doubt it changed.
I believe with Cinewave it used ultimate, and I got a fast, clean key each time.

My plan is to buy the Red camera Scarlet (3k camera) when its released...and I would love to play around on it with a laptop.
Now Im really pushing it.

Again, appreciate the response - how I see it I dont think what Im looking for is there yet.
Perhaps it will get out soon enough, as I have seen other people, here and there, looking for what Im asking for.

Best Regards

dAlen

Okay, that's what I tought you were talking about.

I would suggest VeeScope Live. Available at http://veescope.com/

For $100, you can watch real time chroma keying.

Thanks for the link - I checked it out and its pretty cool.
A bit different than exactly what Im looking for, but pretty cool none-the-less...and not a bad price at all.

Peace

dAlen
