Pipe Studio and FCP 6 ?
by Danrnw on May 18, 2007 at 4:22:16 pm

I assume Aurora is gone so they won't be making any driver or software
updates. I just saw that Blackmagic is having to do updates
for their stuff to work with FCP6. So is this the end of the line for us with
Pipe Studio? Does FCP require some under the hood changes that will not be
forthcoming from Aurora? This will suck if I only get two years out of this
purchase.

I understand that there are a lot of changes in FCP 6. I assume that that will mean my year old Pipe Studio is probably worthless. I guess there is always eBay but people that would use the Pipe Studio will be the people that are upgrading to FCP 6. Time to look at Aja.

Maybe all us Pipe Studio users could chip in $100 or so each, and have the old
Aurora team write new drivers. It would be worth it to me.

I'm all set to kick in some bucks for some drivers.

I still have two Pipe Pro Studio systems....one on an old G4 Dual 1gig and one on a G5 dual 2.7. Still major workhorses and running flawlessly. I also have a Dual 2.7 G5 with a Kona LH. I plan on upgrading that one....I actually have three upgrades that will arrive on Monday. I will use carbon copy cloner to clone the drives and do the upgrade.

What is this gonna take people? Is Mike S still around? Any software people looking for a little freelance work? What a shame we are even having this discussion since the Pipe Studio is such a capable package. Honestly the Kona and the breakout box is laughable compared to the Pipe. I will hate to have to buy two more G5s and two Kona cards just because I upgraded my software.

In fact, if you think of the man hours it would take to actually write new drivers, test them and get them out there for the users, it would be a substantial undertaking, really.

Did anyone look at buying Aurora's resources? This is beginning to sound like an old Media 100 thread back when they were sold to Optibase.

Never thought I'd find myself in this circumstance because things were running along so swimmingly...

I LOVE MY PIPE STUDIO!!!!!!!!!!

So you are going to upgrade but have a fallback position with the CCC partition
or drive? Definitely let us know what happens with your Pipe Studio and FCP6.
I'm not gonna order the upgrade until I find out what's gonna happen with my Pipe.

We are going to be upgrading to HD this summer anyway and probably going with a
KONA 3 or even the HD Io, but I'd like to use the new features of FCP6 with my
Pipe system if I can.

Let us know Rich.
Also I'm still up for paying somebody a reasonable amount for new Aurora drivers
if they are needed.

Thanks,
Dan

I'm willing to pay just to get an exploratory committee working on this. I'm real sorry that we are in a market that isn't full blast HD right now, but we are quite happy with DVD and DVCam delivery. Lots of live shows still projecting standard def. Only a few major corporate clients are projecting HD at their shows. And we have NO requests for HD disc delivery.

Agan, going to try the upgrade and see if it's broke. The one thing that certainly won't be supported is the new Apple codec. that's probably the biggie. Not sure if the upgrade also installs a newer version QT. That could get messy too. Actually not even sure if it will run on my old Dual 1 gig G4.

What I plan to do is keep FCP Studio 1 working with the SD using PipeStudio and cross over to FCP Studio 2 with AJA or Black Magic with a IntelPro in the future. I have not purchase a HD camera as yet I am getting a few HD Job and what I do is edit using SD and do cross conformtion to full HD using someone with a full HD studio this is more cost effective. I still use my Hitachi SK Digital cameras dock to JVC D9 format and when I upconvert to HD My footage look a lot better than any of the small one third inch camera I see out there. So I suggest use what you have for now and save for what you need and make a full crossover and don't upgrade to a new QuickTime or FCP Studio 2 and if you do keep files of your old project intact and old version of FCP Studio and Quicktime good luck.
