welcome Rick - now get to work!!
by Ken Zukin on Mar 25, 2006 at 6:32:08 pm

I recently upgraded from Igniter Studio to Pipe Studio.

At the same time, I upgraded from FCP 4.5 to 5, and from Panther to Tiger, doing a clean install in the process.

These upgrades went smooth, but things seem really balky. Everytime I log & capture, I get a spinning beach ball that lasts for say, 3-5 seconds. The computer (G5 DP 2.0) doesn't crash, but with the Igniter/Panther combo, things felt a lot smoother.

Anyone else having these issues? I'm using a Promax 1 TB tower for storage.

Thanks,

Ken

I'm assuming you also downloaded the lates Pipe drivers...? Also, how did you go about the upgrades and what version of QT are you running? I am still at 7.0.2 on the Pipe machine. How about rebuilding permissions between steps etc. In your case a lot has changed. I would have done it this way...

Get a new hard drive...Install Tiger on the new drive and select the option to carry over apps and data from the old one. Install FCP Studio 5 on the new drive and repair permissions. Install the Pipe Studio drivers and any other apps and rebuild permissions again. Run Disk warrior or at least Disk utility on the new built drive. Select the new drive as my boot drive and startup. Now run Disk utility or disk warrior on the old drive because it probably needs it.

Now you have a Panther drive with the old stuff and a Tiger drive all fresh with the new stuff.

I am very hesitant these days to automatically update my OS with the Software update app. I usually check the FCP forum and others to see what others are finding with any new updates.

What was your procedure for doing the upgrade.

BTW, so far on three machines (I bought the Family pack for Tiger) using a new drive as the new install and bringing over apps and settings from the Panther drive has worked flawlessly so far.

I find that FCP 5 and Tiger have slowed things down a bit from the 4.5/Panther days, but things are pretty darn stable here.

Thanks for the quick response - you and David B. will be a great combo.

I think I pretty much did what you suggest, but maybe not in the order you suggest it get done:

i used Carbon Copy Cloner and backed everything up on a seperate (FW800) drive which I called Panther.
I then did a clean install on my main boot drive (in the G5), installed Tiger, and re-installed all my apps.

Pipe immediately "saw" all of my older Igniter projects. I did download the latest drivers for everything, and am using the most recent v. of QT. And like you, I wait on upgrading the OS for a couple of weeks.

Maybe the "slowing down" of FCP 5 / Tiger is what I was originally complaining about. I also am wondering if it may be a deck-control issue, as I'm still using the Keyspan adaptor from the Igniter days. FWIW, I'm using a Panasonic SD93 DVCPRO 50 deck.

Thanks again, and welcome.

There have been some issues in general with the Panasonic deck control. You should definately switch over to the RS422 connector from the Studio card to the deck...much more responsive and faster than thru any USB adapter setup.

Here is a link to some info on the Panasonic deck control problem...

I loaded Tiger on my iBook the same way you did...also worked great.
