Insert Edit Problems
by Tom Behrens on Aug 8, 2008 at 8:50:32 pm

Our system:
FCP 6.0.4 on Mac OSX 10.5.4 w/ 2 x 2.8 ghz quad core intel xeon
Media storage is on a Terrablock
We're using Blackmagic I/O's (v6.7) and Blackmagic videohub router
Quicktime 7.5
Digibetas (500 and 2000)

Here's another lovely FCP issue: Insert editing doesn't seem to work very well. We've been having an issue with starting an insert edit (a SD project, sequence is pro res 422) and one of a number of problems will crop up: 1, there is no video, just black in the edit to tape window. 2, the correct frame shows up as the deck is pre-rollng but stays frozen after the edit point so you get a freeze frame on tape, 3, you get an error message that the duration is only 1 frame (even though there is both a valid in and out point on the timeline and in the tape machine window) and it won't make the edit, and, last but not least, the machine just cues up to a different in point than what is entered.

#1 above happens the most, the rest are sporadic but do occur.

The sequences are graphic heavy and of a longer format (9-13 minutes) that we sometimes need to make a quick fix. When the edit doesn't work and you waste a lot of time on this, it gets maddening. We've been troubleshooting this for weeks and is doesn't happen all the time. What we have found, however is that you cannot make an insert edit if there is any type of video or audio transition. But the problem still occurs sometimes even when you avoid transitions with your in and out points. Anyone out there have this problem, heard of it or have any other solution ideas?

interesting...i'm having a similar issue. tried to replace a spot on a show tape, mainly to fix the audio from a bad mix, and it looked like it was working, but then i see that it only replaced the video and not the audio. on the good side, it does appear to be frame accurate. have you received any feedback on your question above? i'm going to trash prefs and try it again. oddly enough, i had just trashed prefs last night, so these are pretty fresh...

thanks again!

well, here's my status:

trashed prefs, no change. I can insert video, but not audio. very strange. believe it or not, i've even read the manual on this section! : ) i tried "mastering" vs. "editing", and no change. i've selected audio (all audio, no audio, specific channels) and video on the "edit to tape" window, no change. anyway, i'm just dropping the whole show to tape again...

thanks again!

We have not heard back from anyone regarding this issue but we have in the meantime figured out a couple of things. 1-FCP will not let you insert either audio or video if either the in or out points are over ANY type of video or audio transition, i.e: video dissolve, audio fade, sapphire effect, whatever. Trust me, we have run numerous tests on this and we always get the same result which is to have black sent out to the deck from FCP or, occasionally, a freeze frame of the first frame of video in the edit. 2-We have also run across not being able to enable either video or a specific audio channel (or channels) to insert, the yellow indicators on the edit to tape deck just won't light up. However closing the edit to tape window and re-opening it seems to solve this.

Also, I don't know what type of deck you are mastering to but I seem to remember that some decks are not capable of insert editing only audio as some formats imbed audio within the video track on the tape.

These are big problems Apple should figure out and fix, this is not PRO!

i have a Sony UVW-1800 (BetacamSP), and figure most likely is SHOULD be able to do both kinds of inserts, (though i might be wrong on that), but either way glad to know i'm not alone in failing with these inserts. hopefully it will be addressed soon if it needs to be...

thanks for your reply.

thanks again!
