my g5 won't recognize the sony hvr-a1u, but my imac does just fine. I've tried re-booting, re-setting the capture settings, plugging into other firewire ports, I'm at a loss.
g5:
(gives me the 'unable to initialize device' window)
10.4.11
dual 2ghz ppc
4.5 gb ram
fcp 6.0.3
blackmagic decklink pro for playback on HDTV
set for hdv sony firewire
source is 1080i hdv
so I've got g5 sitting idle while I capture the vid on the imac, while typing this online on the imac, and watching my slingbox on the imac...seems silly, yes??
I'm not freaked out or frustrated (well maybe a little), but I'd take some suggestions.

I would suspect the Black Magic card is the variable factor. Does system profiler recognize the camera on the G5? What settings are you using exactly for capture on both machines?
All the best,

thanks for the quick reply.
yes, system profiler does see the camera (its actually a hvr-a1j)
both machines are set as follows:
sequence preset: HDV - 1080i60
capture preset: HDV
device ctrl preset: Sony HDV Firewire
I've tried a few different settings on the g5 (generic HDV, HDV firewire basic, sony HDV firewire) and I've also de-selected the black magic card as video playback...still no luck.
Yes, the black magic card has caused some other unusual anomalies...I wouldn't be surprised if it has something to do with it. I have captured to the g5 before...and conversely, I've also had trouble capturing with the imac before - but the imac works every time now (probably shouldn't have said that)
Anyway, thanks for your help. I'd take any more suggestions.
