How to make this transition?

Hi, I'm trying to create a transition that I used frequently on Avid, but can't seem to figure out to make it happen in FCP. Here it is...
It starts with a simple horizontal push between 2 shots (easy enuf), then in Avid I'd just add a paint effect to make a horizontal blur (or sapphire plug if avail) on a blank video layer above the push which would blur the push as well.
I can't add anything other than footage to tracks in FCP right? So any ideas on how to create this?
Thanks much.

What you have to do in FCP is to nest the two clips with the push transition, creating a sub timeline, and add the blur effect onto the new nested clip. The "Nest Item(s)" option in the Sequence menu does this for you.
It's similar to the Step In/Out feature in Avid where you build effects using deeper levels of timelines. Like in the keyer where you have the matte on one track och foreground and background on the other tracks.
Unfortunately this does make it more complicated if you need to trim the incoming or outgoing shot or would like to replace them. And it also creates tons of tiny sequences in the browser.
I sure wish they could implement an easier way to add effects to tracks or across clips/transitions.
