Drive won't mount when firewire deck is attached

Has anyone else come across this problem? I'm editing at home with my laptop using a firewire 800 drive and a DSR 45. The firewire drive won't mount unless I unplug the deck. I've had this problem intermittently over the years and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.
Thanks!

can you add a firewire bus via the express 34 slot?
I have this issue with a clamshell dv deck and my AJA HD. Even though I have them on different buses (I added a bus when I purchased the AJA). My firewire drives work fine on this separate FW bus.

Even if they worked together, your firewire bus will only communicate at the speed of the slowest device, so you won't get fireware 800 throughput when the deck is attached.
The suggestion for a separate card, and thus a separate bus, will also give an additional speed benefit.

Thanks Guys,
By a card, I assume you mean an express port firewire device?
