correct output for WMVHD encode

I have been reading and doing tests but regardless of my efforts,
windows media encoder will not recognize any clips I have generated in FCP.

This HD XDcam material.

I have tried uncompressed, h264, and so on.

Encoder says it will accept avi, mpg, but how do we get to those fle types from FCP

My goal is to output 1280 WMV @ 4K or so.

I am fully upgraded & up to date.

Help please, thanks.

Flip4Mac Studio Pro HD or Telestream Episode would give you the ability to do this on Mac.

You can create an AVI with MPEGStreamclip but I haven't tested the results in WME on Windows.

I used this method recently with decent results. As I've mentioned in other posts, I had a problem with a hitch or stutter in shots with a lot of horizontal movement--pans and the like--but that could have been related to the playback environment as well.

I used MPEG Streamclip to make an intermediate AVI in PhotoJPEG codec, 75% quality setting. I think there's a file size limit for AVI's in the Windows Media Encoder (Sorry, I'm not sure on this -- 2GB or 4GB??), so your clip is limited in length for this approach. The AVI was accepted with no problem in WME. I encoded to 1280x720, 29.97fps, key frames at 10s, 4Mbps total data rate.

Flip4Mac did a decent job at this data rate, too. But I liked the WME version a little better. It seems to stay cleaner on cuts, dissolves, and other wholesale exchanges of pixels. I wish I could get Flip tweaked to match the WME, but so far I haven't. Recipes would be appreciated if you find any that work.

Well flip 4 mac does work pretty well I have found, and I can do it in one step which is very time efficient.

Once upon a time (4 years ago) back in FCP 4.5 I was able to make incompressed AVI files and dump them into WME.

these files were LARGE. 100gig -150 gig. so I know WME will take large files. BUT...

at this time I am unable to generate a HD avi file in FCP6.

not sure why. any suggestions?

WME wants and AVI or jpg. tried many different codecs but WME do not SEE them as yet.

Part of the issue may be that Quicktime supports DVCPro25 and DVCPro50 AVI but NOT DVCProHD AVI.

Flip4Mac Studio Pro HD really does do a good job with WMV HD but you have to make sure you're using the latest release 2.2.0.49.
