All is well, still should I upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2?
by Jason Kubicki (jakekub) on Jul 25, 2008 at 7:21:27 pm

Hello Folks,
Another quick question. I have been pondering for a while whether or not upgrade to Final Cut Pro Studio 2. I currently have FCS1 running on a Mac Pro dual quad 2.8GHz and a Macbook Pro 2.4GHz. I shoot with 2 Canon XH A1's to Firestore FCS hard drives and most of my work is for web and SD DVD. I have no need really for capture cards at this point so my workflow is pretty much straight forward. I do a lot of converting my final edit to Flash. Everything seems to be running quite smooth, but I wonder if I am missing something, or some performance boost, or perhaps a better quality codec that is in the new FCS2. I don't do a lot of color correction yet, just basic 3 way color correction. Am I missing out on something great or am I smart to stay where I am?

Cheers!
Jason

Cheers,
Jason

What I like about FCS2 is that it has lots of small differences that improve upon FCS1. In particular, things like being able to rename files through Final Cut, rather than having to go into Finder, rename them, then reconnect the clips. It's little things like that which take a lot of stress out!
However that would be a very silly reason for upgrading an application. The bigger picture is that FCS2 includes an excellent colour correction application, supports the fantastic Pro Res codec and various other things which I'm sure are listed on the Apple website.

Looking at what you use Final Cut for, you probably don't NEED the upgrade. Nobody did, people were still editing feature films and television programmes with the old version. But the upgrade IS better and you'll notice the difference, so if you've got some spare cash you want to spend then go for it.

Thank you for that very informative response Alex. Sounds like some nice features in the upgrade, from what you say I believe that I will stay with FCP5 for the time being. Thank you for the time to respond!

Cheers,
Jason
