DVCPRO720p60 Outputting to 1080i HDCAM workflow? Help!

This is my first HD lay off. I am suppose to layoff an HD project to HDCam tape (through Sony HDW 1800) but I have no idea what the work flow is. The project is in DVCPROHD 720p60 and I want to go to 1080i 29.97.
I guess what I need to do is take the sequence and put it into a Blackmagic 1080i 10bit 29.97 sequence and output that to the deck. But given that my original is only 720, will it blow up my footage to fill in the higher resolution? Am I going to have a non-drop to drop frame issue?
If anyone knows what the work flow is for a FCP 6 with Blackmagic HD extreme decklink card going from DVCPROHD 720p60 to HDCAM 1080i that would be great!! I'm sure this is a pretty common thing to do but I've never done it before.

I do this all the time...but I use the AJA Kona 3 card. It is the only card that can upconvert 720p to 1080i in real time...while you output. And the results are great. Before this card came out, I was having to do what you are mentioning...dropping the footage into a 1080 sequence and rendering. Only I had to deliver a 23.98 tape, and my footage was 23.98. You don't say, is your footage 59.94 or 23.98? If 59.94, then this method with the decklink will work. If 23.98...that is a frame rate conversion and it won't work.

Yes, it will. FCP renders that out fine. AE does it better. And outputting via the Kona 3 is darn good. The card and K-Box are like a mini terranex, and it does this all in hardware, and does it well.

Yes, you will. If your sequence is 23.98 and NDF, and you need to output to 29.97...yeah, there will be an issue. Mainly with timing. Your NDF time will not match your DF time. I have to make adjustments to my NDF timing so that when we make the DF masters, they are timed properly.
Sorry that I don't know the Black Magic way to do this. One of the main reasons I bought the Kona 3 card is because it does this output all in real time. The Decklink cards don't, so you have to do a lot of software rendering before you can output.

It looks like I will be having to convert 23.98 to 29.97. What would be the best way to do this. The footage has already been captured so I cannot do a remove pulldown. Any thoughts?

Is your timeline 23.98 or 60 as you mention in the title of your post? Regardless, as Shane mentions, the AJA Kona 3 performs this conversion in realtime and if this is going to be your standard workflow, definitely consider picking this up.
720 to 1080i is a conversion we make all the time as most of the raw HD material that comes to us is 720p but of course just about all the broadcasters require 1080i. We've now delivered over 100 HD masters to broadcast networks with over half of them having the 720 to 1080i conversion handled by the Kona 3. The conversion is flawless and it's completely realtime.
