I am about to purchase a new macbook pro to be used in the field just to log and capture of hdv footage onto an external drive. When I get back home I'll transfer the footge and project over to a macpro for editing.
My question is can a sata external firewire 800 drivebe used for this with Prores 422?

I don't think a single drive is fast enough. I have a Firmtek 1 TB RAID and work with 1080p ProRes every day on my MBP. The whole thing cost around $600 as I recall.

Hi Peter,
I've just bought two LaCie "Little Big Disk" to download from my EX-1 in the field.
500GBs and you can almost put it in your pocket. Comes with eSATA (3Gbs), FW800/400 and USB2.
If you plug it by FW you don't need any power supply. Is fed from the lap-top. The 500 GB, use 5.400 RPM disks, so do not eats much battery, and the two internal disks are set as "Raid 0". Really fast.
