Raw DV stream pulldown, FS-100 question
by Rob Gulley on Jul 15, 2008 at 7:46:20 pm

Hi all!

New to the forums, would appreciate some help. I apologize in advance if this has already been covered, I tried searching for it.

So here goes... I shot a short film using the Panasonic AG-HVX200 and the FS-100 external hard drive. Because we shot using DVCPRO50, the only format options I had available to me on the FS-100 were RAW DV and P2. I made the boneheaded decision to use RAW DV.

We shot in 24PA and then at one point I switched the camera to 24P (not a big deal since I can tell the difference between 2:3:3:2 and 3:2 by looking at individual frames). The problem: Cinema Tools won't work on raw DV streams. Even when I convert one of my .dv files to .MOV (still with DVCPR050 compression) using QuickTime or FCP Batch Export, the embedded flag (or whatever it is) that says "I'm a 24PA file" doesn't seem to carry over. At the end of it all, I have 24PA footage that Cinema Tools nor FCP will recognize has having removable advanced pulldown. Blah.

The original DV streams are still on the FS-100, but I wouldn't have the faintest clue as to how to live-capture all those individual clips (which all each start at 00:00:00 TC) where I could be removing the Advanced Pulldown on the fly.

I hate to say this, but you should have set your FS-100 to DVCPro 50.

Unless you plan to go out to film, there is no need to shoot in 24p. Use 30p.

Well, "woulda coulda shoulda"s can't help me now.

Do you know anything about how to get the Raw DV streams back into something usable?
