File Transfer - QT .mov from FCP to External Hard Drive for client on PC
by Tim Ryan on Jul 6, 2008 at 8:52:32 pm

Hey All,
First, I just received my first print version of Creative Cow. Well done and very informative.

I have a question about external drive formatting. I'm going to be sending a client the footage I captured for them via external hard drive. The idea is to let them view the footage and create their own shot list which I will then edit for them. My plan was to export the footage (after I do a basic log and capture) as .mov files saved onto an external hard drive and shipped FedEx. They can then open each .mov file to review and compare to my batch list I'll convert to Excel.

The question I have has to do with the external drive. My client works on PC's and I'll be doing all of my work on a Mac. When I purchase a drive for them, I believe I have to format the drive (I have a 2TB drive so have not had to use a new one in a while). Can I format it for a PC on my Mac? Is this even necessary? I basically want them to be able to open the files on their PC's without any problems. They have confirmed already that they have QT player.

Thanks for any advice on this matter.

Tim,

Your best bet is to have the client purchase and install MacDrive on their PC, which will allow you to copy files to any drive formatted as Mac Extended, without any concern for the 2Gb file size limitation that FAT 32 brings into play, while allowing the client to access, read, and write files on that drive seamlessly. It's well worth the $49.00 cost.

Or you can use NTFS on your Mac:
