GSATA Set up for FCP
by Greg Ball on Jul 2, 2008 at 1:16:54 pm

I just bought a new 1TB GSATA drive. In setting it up would I be better off setting it up as a raid? If so should it be mirrored or striped, or should I just hit erase in Disk utility and format it? How do you decide which way to go? I'd like to be able to use as much space as possible. Thanks.

This question about how to set up a drive is asked on almost a daily basis so in the future, you can do a search for RAID, SATA, etc... to find an answer more quickly.

RAID 0 is the fastest, but no protection.

If the unit offers RAID 5 I would recommend that.

Mirrored is a waste of space and very slow.

You might want to consider a better RAID striping program like SoftRaid instead of Apple's disk utility.

FWIW, we have used Apple's Disk Utility with no issues for about 7 years now.

You cannot make a RAID from a single drive. You need a minimum of 2 drives to make any kind of RAID.

Hey Arnie,

That unit does have two 500Gb drives, so it can be raided at raid-0, but I seriously doubt raid-5 that Walter threw into the mix is an option.

Not with only 2 drives. Would probably need a minimum of 3 though 5 is more likely.

So, what you're saying is that I actually need to read these posts before I respond to them? How much fun would that be? ;)

[David Roth Weiss] "I seriously doubt raid-5 that Walter threw into the mix is an option."

RAID 5 (and RAID 3) requires at least 3 drives.
