For some reason shift/delete is not automatically closing the gap in my time line after I use the blade. Any thoughts? Thanks.

There must be something in the way of that process such as a video or audio clip that's not connected to the clip your deleting but resides between the cut points?

Also, the playhead has to be in the gap in order for you to close it.
