upres dv to hd...
by Tom Gliserman on Jun 27, 2008 at 2:11:21 pm

Another guy upre-ings a feature we've been shooting for a couple of years. I've played with compressor, instant hd, boris... Don't have access to a teranex but would consider if the result were that much more dramatic. From the preliminary tests I've done at this point instant hd looks pretty good. I see that instant hd pro only works for AE and I'm not really an AE guy. Any suggestions I haven't considered?

Umm...

GIGO

Garbage in Garbage Out.

All of these solutions are only fair... pretty hard to blow something up 300% and expect it to look good.

We'll use Resier from Digital Anarchy for the occassional shot....

Nothing beats a Teranex... but gaina.... GIGO

GIGO. Undertstood. What is the advantage of the full up teranex over the teranex mini?

DO you have to retime your footage at all? (say from 29.97 to 23.98 or 24?)

no retiming, shot 24pa with an anamorphic adaptor so no pan and scan, really just resizing.

24pA? So your timeline is 23.98?

For dv I'd recommend a teranex type of conversion.

[Tom Gliserman] "I see that instant hd pro only works for AE and I'm not really an AE guy."

As an AE guy, this is darned simple stuff that even a beginner can pull off. Here's the drill:

Export your timeline (I presume it's 23.98) from FCP. If you've already applied effects in FCP, export self-contained using the Animation codec, best quality. Personally, I'd duplicate the timeline, remove all effects and export by reference. If you have Automatic Duck, even better!
Import the footage into AE, and drag it onto the Make Comp icon at the bottom of project window. The frame rate for this comp should read 23.976. Apple LIES to you when it refers to the frame rate as 23.98.
Change the comp's resolution to the HD resolution of your choice, and do your Instant HD voodoo.
Add the comp to the Render Queue (don't export!) and use the Animation codec set to best quality, or the HD codec you'll eventually need.

You may have to color grade again, but that's what you get for not thinking about the next step in the workflow before you did it.

But as Richard Harrington says, GIGO. It's true. You're just putting lipstick on a pig.

[Jeremy Garchow] "Hey. Pigs are cute. "

As a resident of Iowa, where pigs outnumber humans in a few counties, I'll agree that the babies are cute. Once they mature, stop thinkin' about cuteness and start thinkin' about dinner! Ribs, anyone? Bacon? Marinated pork medallions? Grilled chops? Bratwurst? Mmmmmmmm......................
