Crash of FCP on a Macbookpro using external hard disk to save SXS card contents

I saved my footage from SXS card (Sony PMW-EX1)into an external harddrive to save it. Then I opened Final cut and with import (XDCAM...selection) I selected clips from harddrive, first clip is imported then system stop and after few seconds my Macbookpro Intel (4 GB memory/450 gb free on external drive) restarts. Why? I retried several times with the same result.

What is your make and model of external HD and how is it connected?
