I have a dumb but important question I guess.

I head pull down mentioned all the time, and I'm assuming this is done in post-production. What exactly is pull down and how can it be useful/worked in Final Cut Pro 6. I see it a lot of time associated with 24p and such. I'm rather new at using 24p style video and am learning as I go.
