Working with HDV and mini DV
by Phil Beastall on Jun 24, 2008 at 9:19:35 am

I'm currently editing a video which was shot on HDV (1440x1080) and mini DV (720x576 Anamorphic)

I'm currently slicing it together in a DV Pal 720x576 sequence, which has the letterbox black bars, but when it comes to the final output, what sequence settings would I need to put it to, considering the different dimensions and compression? And the fact that I won't want the black bars on output but will mark it was 16:9 for the DVD authoring.

Is the way that I'm editing at the moment a good way to do it or is there a better way of slicing together without compromising quality?

"I'm currently slicing it together in a DV Pal 720x576 sequence, which has the letterbox black bars"

This is wrong. It sounds like you are editing in a 4:3 sequence and not an anamorphic PAL sequence. Make a new sequence that's 16:9 and copy and paste the contents of the 4:3 sequence into the correct anamorphic sequence. You will then have to remove the distort attributes of all the clips.

All the best,

Tom

OK I'll give that a go. Fortunately I haven't done much, and was waiting for the advice. What would you suggest when it comes to the final output. The HDV is a lot larger than the Mini DV footage. Would it be be best to keep it at 1024x576, and shrink the HDV footage? I'm not too familar with upgrading. Would I need to upgrade the mini DV footage up to the size of the HDV?
