I am running FCP 5.1.4 on a Intel MacBook 2GHz Core 2 Duo with 1 GB memory and OS 10.4.11. I've been an FCP user for 5+ years and this is the first time I've seen this particular problem.
The effects and filters worked for a while after installing FCP, but then stopped taking "effect". I can add effects to a clip, but they don't do anything. Both video and audio filters and effects are not working.
The transitions work by the way, no problem with any video or audio transitions.
I trashed preferences, without any effect on the problem.
I've been using this laptop as a back up mostly, so I am able to finish projects on my G4 tower, but I've gotten quite attached to my laptop...and this is really annoying. I've trolled the forums with no answers yet.
I saw one other post on this subject with no answers.
But if you have more time to investigate why some of your effects have disappeared I would suspect that it's a maintenance problem with your laptop. Over time and without periodic maintenance some files may become "orphaned" and big programs will lose the ability to find things like plugins, etc.
Try using Disk Utility first and repair your startup drive's permissions. Then use DiskWarrior to rebuild the directory on your startup drive. DiskWarrior is a great program that has righted a lot of wrongs with regard to reconnecting everything a program like FCP needs to function properly.
But if you're in a hurry and don't have access to DiskWarrior until Monday (when you rush out to buy it!!) then by all means re-install Final Cut Studio.

I second Don's suggestion. Run DiskWarrior or TechTools in a regular basis and avoid those situations.
Is like the lubricant for the Mac OX engine.

Thanks, I believe I repaired permissions already, but will do again, just in case I just *think* I repaired them. Not in too much of a hurry but would like to get this fixed soon! I love being able to rough edit anywhere, although I wish I would have splurged on the MacBook Pro...
Will report what works.

Hi Jacqueline,
The maintenance that DiskWarrior or TechTools do, is something much deeper than just repair Permissions. They re-build the HDs directories.
I run DW once every week or two weeks even if everything goes well. As soon as I run it, my external HDs speed up a 25 %.
