i want apply same fx to a bunch of clips -- but i can't nest because there are intercuts
by Geoffrey Plitt on Jun 13, 2008 at 4:44:49 am

I have 10 back-to-back clips, switching from one angle to another:

A B A B A B A B A B

I want to apply the same effect to all the A's, but not the B's. My understanding of nesting is that it only works if the clips are all together, but my situation is alternating.

In digital-audio programs, I would assign all the A clips to "FX channel 1" and then put the effect on that channel, and then they'd all get the effect. But is this kind of thing possible in FCP?

I'm using 5.1

thanks!
g

Command click on every other clip to highlight them, apply the effect to all at one time.

i guess that works. but if i then want to tweak the settings, i have to tweak it in each one. it basically creates a bunch of "copies" of the effect, that are then independent. it would be nice if it created "links" to a single effect, which you could change in one place and effect all of them.

Sure would. I've been suggesting that for years. I call it styles, similar to a stylesheet on a website or a wordprocessing document.

[Geoffrey Plitt] "but if i then want to tweak the settings, i have to tweak it in each one"

It's Apple's way of encouraging you to make your tweaks, apply that tweak to all the other clips you want to apply it to, and then move on. You should thank Apple for getting yu to the finish line faster.

Geoffrey,

An easier way to select/change all your "A" clips (especially in a long sequence) is to put your playhead at the beginning of the sequence. Hit apple F. Type in the name of your clip and hit find all. This will highlight all your "A" clips in one shot.

Then it is much easier to paste attributes.

Apply any set of effects to the first A clip and tweak them to taste. Now select the clip and copy it via keyboard or menu command. Command-select every other A clip you want to have the effects, right or ctrl-click and select "paste attributes". Uncheck every box but "filters" and hit OK.

If you want to make changes later, select all but the first clip and "remove [filter] attributes". Make your changes to clip 1's filters then repeat the paste attributes.

Lift all the B clips into another track above the A clips. Then Nest just the original track with the A clips in it, and apply effect. I think that should work; I'm away from my system right now, so I cant be sure, but I will double-check later. I'm using 6.0.3, but I imagine its the same in 5.1

I forgot to add - you can add slug on the A track in the gaps where the b-clips used to be, in case nesting only works on contiguous clips.

Nesting will work if you have gaps, you don't need to use slugs.

I was going to suggest the "past attributes" method, but Zak got there first. I love that feature and use it all the time.
