RAIDS RAIDS RAIDS...

Ok, dipping my toe into this mine field and it seems to come back with more questions that answers.
Firstly, this is what I am after.
a raid 5 system with about 2 terrebytes storage. It MUST easily handle 10bit uncompressed SD. As for High def, I'm happy with ProRes HQ as my top quality.
What I have is
Macpro
FCP 6.0.3
Blackmagic HD extreme.
My budget is roughly $1 per gig. Hopefully less. (Australian dollar)
currently I'm using a small internal raid.
Now I've looked at the caldigit and other stuff, I've looked at the various reviews for various raids here and checked forums.
but a few questions....
I have seen various quotes on data rates for eSata Raids from 140MB/s up to 300MBs. How can this vary so wildly for similar spec'd machines? (example the discontinued cal digit S2VR HD suggests up to 300MBs but something like this, which seems similar
As after a long talk with these guys we narrowed it down to something like this.
- a couple of things about this unit as I understand it.
If a drive dies. A new drive needs to be put in before you can continue. So unlike some units, I can't just continue until I get around to replacing it. I need to replace and rebuild before continuing. I understand the trade off here as opposed to a system that can keep chunking through.

Hi Fellow Aussie!
Hamish, just wondered how you got on regarding your raid..what you ended up with, happy etc.? I'm surprided there were no responses on the cow. You asked a lot of the questions I'm also interested in.
I'm just about to do a major upgrade and researching options etc so any insights greatly appreciated!

[Evan Meades]"I'm surprided there were no responses on the cow. You asked a lot of the questions I'm also interested in."
The subject of hard drives and RAIDS comes up almost on a daily basis and pretty much all of the questions asked have been answered in other threads here in this forum.
